The investigation of how to depict movement based on memory. Through a series of studies, I seek to answer the question...if one could shape their memories from a city what form would it take? How would it feel, look and sound?
This installation represents a juxtaposition of my memories and movement while living in New Orleans prior to Katrina and moving to a new city, Chicago. The shapes derive from my memory maps pin-pointing specific locations that form the imageability of these two cities - hence depicting the city's visual grammar. The photos consist of photography I've taken in both cities reflecting my memories transposed onto the large structure. As the viewer walks 360 degrees around the structure, they are able to experience a juxtaposition of my cultural journey living in both cities that plays upon the 5 senses (smell, touch, sight, sound, and taste) while investigating the legibility of each city. It encourages the viewer to uncover what they see as the the two visual stories of each city is reflected and merged together in the center of the piece. Peak in..what do you see? This piece seeks to answer: Does signage and wayfinding influence the choices we make when navigating within a city? Can the aesthetic persona of buildings shape our perception of how we choose to move and think about the city? Can people influence the design of a city based on how we use it? In order to truly understand the visual grammar of a city, we must understand ourselves as a person and what drives our journey.
